Tube Etiquette
London is a metropolis, stretching as far as the eye can see. Yet, it is easy to travel around the city using the tube (the name of London’s underground) or buses. The entire system is incredibly efficient. Students will receive an Oyster card to use to get back and forth from their dorms in Kentish Town to the IES Centre in Bloomsbury, or anywhere else in the city for that matter.

When using the tube, there are a few rules that enable the smooth flow of traffic, especially when you are trying to move about during busy rush hour. First, descend the stairs on the left side and ascend on the left. Same goes when you are making your way to the platforms—stay to the left.
In many tube stations, you will have to ride multiple escalators to reach your platform. It is, don’t forget, the Underground! So, whenever you ride the escalator , always stand to the right. This enables passengers who are in a hurry to pass you on the left. Following these few simple rules will get you from point A to point B effortlessly and with no dirty looks from others.

REMEMBER: You must swipe your Oyster card both when you enter and when you exit the tube station.
Citymapper is a fabulous app that will give you all the information you need to move about the city with ease. Type in your destination and the app will tell you which bus or tube station (and how to get to it), which line (heading in which direction) which platform, when the train or bus will arrive, how many stops to go, where to switch (if necessary) and the estimated time it will take you. It’s easy to use and makes what may at first seem overwhelming completely manageable. In no time at all, you will be a seasoned commuter! Happy tube travels!!!
